Moving can be one of life’s most stressful events -- especially when you’re in your 90s. Working on my first client move, I realized this job isn’t just about packing boxes. It’s about lifting the emotional weight off people’s shoulders and helping them settle into their new space with minimal stress, comfort, and ease. For Bob and Julie, lovely folks in their mid-90s, their transition was more than a move—it was the start of a new chapter, and I was honored to make the transition go smoothly, and even bring joy.
As they aged, I helped both my mom and grandmother transition to smaller living spaces, leaving behind homes they had lived in for many decades -- it was a truly stressful and challenging process for everyone involved. When I saw this job opportunity, I knew my personal experience, empathy, and organization skills would be put to good use with Caring Transitions.
On my first day working with Caring Transitions I met Bob and Julie, a lively and spunky couple despite their age. They kept the mood light with jokes and even tried to lend a hand to the team, all while facing the incredibly tough task of deciding what to keep and what to let go. At their age, just getting through the day can be challenging, let alone making thousands of decisions and packing up everything they own to start a new chapter -- a new life, really.
We carefully packed up everything in Bob and Julie’s house on my first shift. As we worked through well-loved books, belongings, and sentimental keepsakes, I could imagine the emotional burden we were lifting by taking on some of this work ourselves. I learned the proper way to handle everything, from wrapping fragile heirlooms to neatly packing bedroom linens, all while our team leader checked in with them and assured them, their belongings and logistics for the move were in good hands.
The next day we moved everything into their new space. But unlike a standard moving company, our team’s goal was to make their new home feel instantly familiar, as if they already live there. Careful notes and photos guided us as we placed everything in its rightful spot, down to the CPAP machine and toothbrushes. Family pictures were carefully hung on the walls, and I found myself drawing on my artistic and design skills to brighten their new space. The team spent time determining where to place every single item the couple would need for easy access and I began to realize how special this service is, to ease the stress of a senior relocation on everyone involved and make sure they can start living well in the space the second they arrive.
When Bob and Julie walked through the door to their new home, our team could feel their joy and relief. Julie wandered through the space, her eyes lighting up as she noticed the art and family pictures we had thoughtfully placed, some art and keepsakes had sat neglected in closets for ages. Before we left, she grabbed my hands with heartfelt gratitude, thanking us for turning what could have been an overwhelming experience into one filled with care and compassion.
